Wendy Newhofer: shedworker

Artweeks is a major three-week celebration of Oxfordshire’s artistic talent with free shows in artists’ homes, studios, and galleries. Among those exhibiting this year is Wendy Newhofer who also won the annual Mary Moser prize, awarded to help develop the career of a professional Oxfordshire artist who has taken up art as a second career later in life (Wendy was previously a primary school teacher).

For her first half a dozen years as a glass artist, Wendy worked in the coal hole in the cellar of her home in the Jericho area of Oxford as this was the only place large enough to hold her kiln. But last year she installed a purpose-built garden studio complete with a larger kiln. Wendy's art involves fusing leaves of different metals between two pieces of glass: she draws within the glass to produce attractive colours when it is fired. Her work is on show at her garden studio at 82 Southmoor Road, Oxford, from May 21 to 30, and at the O3 Gallery at Oxford Castle.
